Wedding showers are a rite of passage that signals that a woman is becoming a wife. In olden days, showers were given so that the newly married couple would have food and essentials for their life together. Most gifts were small and the party was a small gathering to welcome a young girl into womanhood. Boy, times have changed. Showers are often elaborate parties for the bride with very expensive gifts.

Wedding showers are a time for friends and family to get together to share stories about the future bride and her groom. Experienced wives give the new bride advice about marriage and talk about how long they have known the bride. Some even talk about the groom. Hostesses go to a lot of trouble to make sure that the bridal party is perfect for the bride.

Most hostesses of bridal showers either choose white or the bride’s bridal colors for the party color scheme. Whatever the color scheme, the food table is always a work of art. Beautiful platters of fruit, vegetables, and finger fruit brighten up the table. Lovely bridal decorations or flowers complete the bountiful table.

Although flowers are the traditional centerpiece, some hostesses have started new traditions. One such lovely tradition is the towel wedding cake. What? A wedding cake made of towels. How tacky! Think again. Towel wedding cakes are both beautiful and useful. They make very elaborate centerpieces.

If you are not interested in making the towel wedding cake centerpiece yourself, check the Internet or a local gift shop. More than likely you will find a beautiful example of this centerpiece. You might even save money by bidding on EBay. Since you can find anything on the Internet and often at an inexpensive price, place your order as soon as you have a date. Before you make the arrangement, ask the bride what colors she is using for the master bath. As long as the color isn’t too strange, order the towel centerpiece in the same color the bride is using. That way after the wedding, she can take the towel wedding cake apart and use the towels.

If you are crafty, you might want to make the towel centerpiece yourself. First you need 12 hand towels, 20 safety pins, ribbon, and 1 bath towel. The first step is to fold the hand towels into thirds lengthwise. Then roll the bath towel that will be the center of the cake. It should be at least 3 hand towels high and high enough for 3 tiers.

Next roll the hand towels around the bath towel to make the cake. Pin to secure the hand towels where you need to for security. You will use 7 hand towels for the base, 4 hand towels for the second layer, and then 4 for the top. Use the ribbon as a decoration. Adding pretty silk flowers is another nice touch. Don’t use real flowers here because they will wilt. If you hate silk flowers, hold your nose and use them anyway. They do make the cake centerpiece pretty.

The towel wedding cake centerpiece is really spectacular on the food or even the gift table. The bride and her mother will be so touched that you have taken the time to make such a great decoration and gift.
